Keeping Your System in Check

When our kidneys fail, they are no longer able to filter and clean blood, causing unsafe levels of waste products to build up in our bodies. Your doctor will advise you to undergo dialysis treatment.

Dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that helps your body get rid of unwanted toxins, waste products, and excess fluids by filtering your blood. Dialysis supports most of the kidney function. When coupled with medication and proper care, dialysis can help people live a fuller life.

According to the National Kidney Foundation guidelines, it is recommended that you begin dialysis when your kidney function drops to 15 percent or less, or if you are experiencing severe symptoms caused by kidney disease, such as shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle cramps, nausea, or vomiting. Based on your symptoms and the results of lab tests that measure how much kidney function you are left with, your doctor will indicate when you should begin dialysis treatment.

At BTMC, we have 10 dialysis treatment bays that serve inpatients and outpatients. We have a resident Nephrologist that visits regularly to check on your progress.
