Obstetrics and Gynaecology at BTMC, Malaysia

Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OB/GYN) is a branch of medicine that specialises in the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth and in diagnosing and treating diseases of the female reproductive organs. OB/GYN also specialises in other women's health issues, such as menopause, hormone problems, contraception (birth control), and infertility.

While OB/GYN is considered one speciality, it comprises two distinct fields. Obstetrics (OB) involves care during pre-conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and immediately after delivery. Gynaecology (GYN) is the care of all women's health issues.

What Diseases Do Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Treat?

Conditions that OB/GYN commonly treats include:

  • Cervical Cancer
  • Cervical Insufficiency
  • Congenital Abnormalities
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Hirsutism
  • Infertility
  • Menopause

Gynaecologic diseases, in general, are diseases involving the female reproductive tract. These diseases include benign and malignant tumours, pregnancy-related diseases, infection, and endocrine diseases.

Obstetricians focus on delivering babies and providing medical care to women during pregnancy (antenatal care) and after birth (postnatal care). They have the skills to manage complex or high-risk pregnancies and childbirth and perform interventions and caesareans.

Finding Your Best and Trusted OB/GYN

OB/GYN is best suited if you have questions or concerns regarding the female reproductive system, including breasts, uterus, ovaries and vulva. It also can include some urological or gastrointestinal symptoms or if you have menstrual, pregnancy, fertility or contraception questions or issues.

A visit to the gynaecologist is recommended for annual health screening and any time a woman has concerns about symptoms such as pelvic, vulvar, and vaginal pain or abnormal bleeding from the uterus. It is standard advice for women to talk with a gynaecologist each year starting around age 15, to get a complete annual exam starting around age 21, and to be tested for cervical cancer every few years after that.

Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should visit their gynaecologist every year for a regular exam and in between visits for any issues that arise. If you become sexually active before turning 21, you should also visit your gynaecologist yearly.

How do Women Specialists Treat Their Patients?

They diagnose and treat conditions related to the reproductive system, such as performing screening exams, offering birth control counselling, and preventing infections. Most OB/GYN perform surgery and often consult with other healthcare professionals if the condition does not fall under their medical skill set.

Gynaecologists give reproductive and sexual health services, including pelvic exams, Pap tests, cancer screenings, and testing and treatment for vaginal infections. They diagnose and treat reproductive system disorders such as endometriosis, infertility, ovarian cysts, and pelvic pain.

For Obstetricians, your first appointment is typically between 8 and 12 weeks of pregnancy and will include a complete medical history and a thorough physical exam, including a pelvic exam, breast exam, urine test, pap smear and blood tests. Obstetricians also feel your abdomen to check the baby's position, measure your womb (uterus) to check your baby's growth, and listen to your baby's heartbeat when you want them to.

OB/GYNs can also perform a wide range of routine and in-office procedures, including:

  • Pap smears to test for cervical cancer
  • STI tests
  • Fertility treatments, such as egg retrievals for IVF or egg-freezing
  • Pelvic ultrasounds to check the pelvic organs and monitor pregnancy
  • Infertility treatments and counselling
