Dermatology

What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is a field of medicine that primarily focuses on maintaining healthy skin and managing skin conditions that vary in the degree of seriousness.Dermatology also includes the care and treatment of nails, scalp, and hair issues.

Dermatologists are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of over 3,000 conditions.Because of this, dermatologists are also occasionally referred to as hair and skin doctors.

Why do we need dermatology?

As the body’s largest organ, our skin is often the first line of defence against all types of infections and injuries. For this reason, dermatologists play an essential role in helping patients maintain healthy skin and ensuring its proper function.

It is recommended that the public get a medical checkup with a certified dermatologist at least once a year. This ensures that any skin complications can be identified early and controlled.

If left unchecked, symptoms that initially seem harmless may lead to a more serious illness. A proper evaluation by a dermatologist can also help identify potential health risks that exist within the body.

When do I need to see a dermatologist?

The role of a dermatologist includes the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases, as well as advising patients on appropriate skin care routines best suited to their skin conditions.

Generally, patients who experience the following conditions and symptoms are recommended to seek consultation with a licensed dermatologist:

  • Dry skin
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Rashes and warts

This is because these symptoms could be signs of a more serious underlying condition. SKINCENTRIC at Bukit Tinggi Medical Centre (BTMC) has treatments for conditions such as:

  • Atopic dermatitis and dermatitis – a relatively common ailment that affects people of all ages. Dermatitis manifests in the form of rashes and skin irritations.
  • Psoriasis – an autoimmune disease characterised by inflammation of the skin. It is frequently identified by thick sections of discoloured and scaly skin known as plaques.

Cosmetic dermatology

Dermatologists are also involved in the aesthetic aspects of skin and hair treatment, whether to hide remnants of aforementioned skin conditions or to improve one’s looks.

There are many reasons that a patient may want to enhance their physical appearance, including improved self-confidence, mental health benefits and more.

Cosmetic dermatologists use individualised treatment regimens, skin product recommendations, and other non-invasive treatments to assist patients with these goals. This includes conditions that are related to the:
